Self-Selected Sliding Scale Rates for Families
All families have different financial circumstances.
I trust you to choose the sliding scale rate that works best for your family.
Let’s take one tiny step towards a more equitable and compassionate future together…
Why do you offer self-selected sliding scale rates?
For a few reasons:
— After acquiring a chronic health condition, I am uncomfortable charging my full tutoring rates because my health does not always allow me to be quite as reliable as I would wish. While I have not had to cancel often, it eases my stress to know that my reduced rates reflect my transparency about my health.
— Our family lives simply on a very modest income. We know what it is like to encounter hard times. We have encountered generosity and kindness over the years, and we believe in paying that forward.
— Our family knows how hard it is to find affordable, neurodivergent-affirming, high-quality supports. We want to make growth and hope accessible to as many children and families as possible.
— I believe that most human beings live with integrity and compassion. We all have countless opportunities to lift one another up. This is one doable step that I can take.

Additional Financial Support
If my reduced rates and self-selected sliding scale rates are still a barrier to accessing support, families can apply for the Shane Thurston Scholarship (see below) and/or reach out about the limited number of pro bono spots I provide.
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
If your family is considering the sliding scale, I invite you to reflect on the following:
What does our family need to meet basic needs without sacrificing our foundational well-being?
Would paying the full tutoring rate require giving up necessities, or is it possible to shift non-essential costs to prioritize tutoring (ex., frequency/cost of vacations, eating out, and/or entertainment-related expenses)?
Does our family already rely on other scholarships or community supports (Medicaid, SNAP, Free & Reduced Lunch)?
You can call it the “golden rule”, the foundation of a strong community, or just being the best human you can be… with self-selecting sliding scale rates, you have the opportunity and the responsibility to balance the needs of your family with the needs of our family.
You are trusting me with the well-being of your family, and I am trusting you with the well-being of my family.
I ask all families who access the sliding scale to take a few minutes to apply for the Shane Thurston Scholarship.
